tanedango

Today, my elementary kids had an activity where they learned how to make tanedango (種団子/seed dumplings?).  Unfortunately I didn’t get to make any! :( It honestly looked like making desserts. It reminded me of when we made wagashi last week.  It looked pretty good to eat, too, but it wasn’t chocolate, but dirt!   The kids seemed to really enjoy it.

After school, my package from UNIQLO arrived! Yay!
I got some t-shirts for summer that I love so much, but it was 55 degrees today!  It’s June! Definitely not summer weather… The first shirt is a line from one of my favorite poems “When love arrives” by Phil Kaye and Sarah Kay.  They’re both half Japanese!
They both came to my school to perform once and I actually ran into Phil Kaye in Ikebukuro station last year! Here’s a pic!

I don’t drive (or have a license or car, for that matter), which honestly is pretty tough in the rural area.  Luckily, I live in an area where most things are accessible by foot.  I can walk to the town hall, more than one grocery store, the convenience store, post office, bank, community center, and train station.  However, people are still always looking out for me and it makes me want to cry, I appreciate it so much.  Today after school, a teacher asked me if I walked to school since it was raining, then she offered to drop me home since she had to go to a meeting at the same time anyway.  Then, on my way to yoga, which is at the community center, one of the other ladies saw me crossing the bridge and offered me a ride.  I had only seen her once before, but she was so kind.  She lives really close to me, so she said I could ask her any time and even visit sometimes.

Not to mention, my coworkers at the town hall, who always drive me every where and have seen me struggling in the rain/snow in the winter and helped me. (Don’t worry, mom and dad, I still won’t get a ride from strangers!)
